Reading Comprehension Foundations — Lesson 1 · 8:14

The completed first lesson includes the library passage, all five library questions with explanations, a museum transfer exercise with two further answers, revision and a spoken programme-enrolment ending. The original opening is followed by 40 selected continuation takes, with 50 chapter markers. This completes Lesson 1, not every entrance programme’s examination syllabus.

AI-avatar presentation. The original uploaded footage and narration are retained in an uncropped inset, including changes in clothing, framing and delivery. Its generated background boards contain artefacts; use the large script-based teaching board on the right. That added board corrects wording and answer choices from the approved lesson script, with the editorial change labelled inside the video. The written companion is not a verbatim transcript. These are original teaching exercises, not official past questions. On other entrance programmes, use this shared class as optional reading-skills support.

Read both passages and check all seven questions

Original library passage: To support students who work during the day, a college library extended its closing time from six in the evening to nine. Evening attendance increased in the first month, but the total number of books borrowed remained almost unchanged. Some evening visitors used the library’s computers or brought their own study materials. The librarian therefore suggested assessing the pilot through student feedback and evening attendance, rather than borrowing figures alone. The college has not yet decided whether to make the later closing time permanent.

Reading method: Read → locate evidence → reason → eliminate → answer. Attendance and borrowing measure different activities. Some does not establish all or most. Not established is not the same as proved false.

Question 1: Which statement best expresses the main idea?

Later closing hours increased book borrowing.
The library pilot should be judged by more than borrowing totals.
Students have stopped using printed books.
Extended library hours always improve examination results.

Show answer 1 and explanation

Answer: B. The passage recommends looking beyond borrowing totals because visitors may use computers or their own materials. A contradicts the borrowing trend. C generalizes beyond the evidence. D introduces examination results that the passage does not discuss.

Question 2: Which conclusion is best supported?

Permanent extended hours have already been approved.
Every evening visitor used a computer.
Borrowing figures may not reflect every useful form of library use.
Most college students work full-time.

Show answer 2 and explanation

Answer: C. Computer use and independent study support C. A conflicts with the pending decision. B changes some into every. D invents a proportion of full-time workers that is not given.

Question 3: In the library passage, what does assessing most nearly mean?

Cancelling.
Financing.
Evaluating.
Extending.

Show answer 3 and explanation

Answer: C. Evaluating preserves the meaning in context. Cancelling stops the pilot, financing funds it, and extending makes it longer; none of those means judging how well it worked.

Question 4: What does but contrast in the sentence about attendance and borrowing?

A planned pilot and a cancelled pilot.
Increased attendance and almost unchanged borrowing.
Two different colleges.
Student opinions and staff salaries.

Show answer 4 and explanation

Answer: B. The sentence contrasts two measures: attendance increased while borrowing remained almost unchanged. Cancellation, another college and staff salaries are not the contrast described.

Question 5: Which claim is NOT established by the library passage?

Later closing hours were being tried.
The librarian recommended considering student feedback.
Closing time changed from six to nine in the evening.
The pilot improved students’ examination scores.

Show answer 5 and explanation

Answer: D. Examination scores are not reported. The other three statements have support in the passage. Not established means insufficient information here, not proved false.

Original museum practice passage: A museum introduced online booking. Weekend attendance rose, but the number of visitors buying guided tours stayed nearly the same. Some visitors preferred exploring independently. The museum decided to review attendance, visitor feedback, and tour sales before expanding the system.

Question 6: Which conclusion is best supported by the museum passage?

Online booking failed.
No visitor bought a guided tour.
Every visitor preferred exploring independently.
Tour sales alone cannot describe all visits.

Show answer 6 and explanation

Answer: D. Some visitors explored independently, so guided-tour sales cannot describe every way people experienced the museum. A declares failure without sufficient evidence, B invents zero sales, and C changes some into every.

Question 7: Does the museum passage prove that online booking caused the attendance increase?

Show answer 7 and explanation

Answer: No. The passage reports a sequence, not proof of causation. Other influences on attendance would need to be considered; the passage does not establish what those influences were.

Answer ledger: 1 B · 2 C · 3 C · 4 B · 5 D · 6 D · 7 No. Identify the main idea, locate evidence, infer carefully, test vocabulary in context and follow the connecting words.
