Welcome to SSC CHSL. We will study Programme Reader 02 — Core Concepts & Vocabulary, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Preparation for SSC CHSL with focus on aptitude, language skills, current affairs and recruitment-driven practice. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Now the subject vocabulary. In quantitative aptitude, know that a ratio compares two quantities of the same kind while a rate compares different kinds. Per cent means per hundred, and a percentage point change is not a per cent change. Take a question that turns entirely on vocabulary rather than arithmetic. A trader marks a shirt at eight hundred rupees, allows a discount of ten per cent, and still makes a profit of twenty per cent. What did the shirt cost him? Read the words in order. Marked price is eight hundred. Discount is always reckoned on the marked price, so the reduction is one tenth of eight hundred, that is eighty, and the selling price is seven hundred and twenty. Profit is always reckoned on the cost price, so the selling price is the cost price increased by one fifth, which means seven hundred and twenty equals six fifths of the cost price. The cost price is therefore seven hundred and twenty multiplied by five and divided by six, that is six hundred rupees. Every step here is simple arithmetic. The only ways to lose the mark are to apply the discount to the cost price or the profit to the selling price, and both are vocabulary failures. In a speed examination, vocabulary failures are the commonest single cause of a confidently wrong answer, because nothing in the working feels wrong while you are doing it. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is computing profit on the selling price, which is the single most frequent error in commercial arithmetic. The second is treating a percentage and a percentage point as interchangeable, which corrupts every chart-based question. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Profit is always reckoned on the cost price, so the selling price is the cost price increased by one fifth, which means seven hundred and twenty equals six fifths of the cost price. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. First question: on which quantity is a discount reckoned, and on which is profit reckoned? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: Discount on the marked price and profit on the cost price, unless a question states otherwise. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
