Welcome to UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) — Interview / Personality Test. We will study What the Personality Test Assesses: The Official Objective and the Listed Qualities, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Interview preparation for confidence, communication, current issues awareness and personality-based assessment. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. The candidate is interviewed by a Board which has before it a record of the candidate's career: the Detailed Application Form (DAF). The object is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service, by competent and unbiased observers. Member: "You studied mechanical engineering. Why should an engineer become a District Collector?" Weak answer: "Because engineers are good at problem solving and India needs good administrators. I have always wanted to serve the nation." Why it is weak: any candidate could say it; it shows no depth and reveals nothing about the candidate's mind. Stronger answer: "Sir, a Collector deals with problems that are partly technical, such as flood embankments or checking whether a water scheme's pipeline actually delivers. My training helps me read a project report and ask engineers the right questions. But administration also needs people skills and knowledge of law, which I would have to learn in training and in the field." Mapping to the qualities: a direct answer (alertness), concrete examples (clear exposition), an admitted limitation (balance and integrity), and a link between background and job (personal suitability). Follow-up: "The engineers in the district will know more than you. Why should they listen to you?" Good handling: "They would know more about the technical side, Sir, and I would rely on them. My role would be to coordinate departments, set priorities and ensure accountability. Understanding their language helps me ask better questions rather than overrule them." The candidate assimilates the challenge and refines the answer without becoming defensive. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? 1. Treating the interview as a quiz. Correction: the notification says it is not a knowledge test; prepare reasoning and your DAF, with facts only as support. 2. Confusing fluency with clarity. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. My training helps me read a project report and ask engineers the right questions. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. According to the notification, is the Personality Test designed to test your general knowledge? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: No. Knowledge has been tested in the written papers; the interview assesses personal suitability and mental calibre. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
