Welcome to Law Career Guidance. We will study The Map of Legal Careers in India: Litigation, Judiciary, Corporate, Government and Academia, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. 1. Litigation practice. A litigator is an advocate who appears in courts and tribunals for clients. The gateway is enrolment on the roll of a State Bar Council and clearing the All India Bar Examination for a certificate of practice. Scenario. Meera is in the fourth year of a five-year integrated LLB. She enjoys moot courts, dislikes long-horizon uncertainty about income, and wants to live in her home state. Step 1 — list the gateways. Litigation: enrolment and the Bar examination after graduation. Judiciary: state judicial service examination; she must read the latest notification of her state to see whether prior practice is required. Corporate: internships in the fourth and fifth years that may convert to offers. Government: public service commission posts for law officers. Step 2 — match preferences. Her dislike of income uncertainty weighs against starting an independent litigation practice immediately. Her love of courtroom work points to litigation or the judiciary. Her wish to stay in her home state favours the state judicial service or a regional practice. Step 3 — build a sequence. A reasoned plan: enrol after graduation, join a litigation chamber in the state's High Court or district courts, and prepare for the judicial service examination alongside practice. This keeps the judicial door open (where practice is required, she builds it) while building courtroom skill. Step 4 — name the risk. If she clears the examination early, she moves; if not, she has a growing practice. Neither outcome is wasted. Second scenario. Arjun, a three-year LLB graduate with an earlier commerce degree, likes contracts and numbers. The map suggests transactional law firms, in-house legal teams in finance companies, or compliance roles. His first move is to seek internships in corporate teams and to build drafting samples of commercial agreements. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? 1. Treating "law career" as one thing. Correction: identify the pathway first; each has its own gateway, skills and timeline. 2. Assuming the judicial examination needs no experience. Correction: read the current state notification and rules, because the practice requirement has changed over time. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Step 2 — match preferences. Her dislike of income uncertainty weighs against starting an independent litigation practice immediately. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Which constitutional provision prescribes the seven-year standing for an advocate seeking appointment as a District Judge? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: Article 233(2) of the Constitution of India. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
