Foundational study guides: route orientation, study method and original worked practice. These are not a complete examination syllabus, an eligibility decision, regulator-endorsed training or a newly activated paid LMS course. Verify your individual requirements and examination session with the responsible regulator before committing money or making an application.

Chapter 1

Admission route and the exemption evidence file

The solicitor admission route brings together degree-level qualification or equivalent, the required SQE assessments or granted exemptions, character and suitability, and the applicable work-experience requirement. Qualified lawyers are treated differently from candidates relying on qualifying work experience. Foreign admission is not a blanket exemption from the assessments.

Keep your regulator's exemption decision separate from a training provider's advice. Apply for an exemption before booking the relevant assessment and check the exact scope of any grant. This guide cannot determine an applicant's individual entitlement.

Suggested study task: make a four-column evidence sheet headed requirement, document, issuing authority and unresolved question. Put an admission certificate and an assessment-exemption decision in different rows: one proves professional status; the other changes which assessment must be taken. Mark missing evidence as missing, rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Chapter 2

Turn reading into a reasoned answer

Use a three-pass study routine. First, read the problem without the options and identify the client, requested outcome, relevant event and potential deadline. Secondly, formulate the narrow issue and identify which rule actually decides it. Thirdly, compare each answer against both the rule and the facts. A statement can be legally plausible yet answer the wrong question.

Build a rule card with five fields: trigger, conditions, exception, consequence and evidence needed. Write one example where the rule applies and another where a single changed fact defeats it. This makes revision a test of discrimination rather than a list of memorised labels.

For a written or oral practice task, start with the client's decision, then explain the legal reason and the next factual enquiry. Use plain language, do not guarantee an outcome, and distinguish what is established from what still needs checking. This is a ZELVU study method, not a replacement for the SRA assessment specification.

Chapter 3

Original practice — conflicting dates in a client file

This is a fictional training packet, not a statement of the law of England and Wales or a sourced SQE question. Assume its rule is: a written challenge must be received within 14 calendar days after service; the service day is excluded. A late challenge is accepted only where an authorised extension was granted before expiry. Email transmission alone does not establish receipt.

A decision was served on 2 April. The client emailed a challenge on 16 April at 23:50. The receiving system acknowledged receipt on 17 April at 00:05. A colleague says that sending before midnight is always sufficient. No extension document is in the file.

Write a 180-word advice note identifying the provisional deadline, the factual uncertainty, the colleague's mistaken assumption and the documents to obtain. Then explain which single additional fact could materially change your conclusion. Do not import a real procedural rule to replace the supplied rule.

Attempt first, then compare

Write your own response before revealing the explanation. Identify which facts activate the supplied rule and where further evidence is needed.

Reveal the worked model answer

On the supplied rule, day one is 3 April and day fourteen is 16 April. Receipt, not merely dispatch, is the relevant event. The acknowledgement suggests a receipt after expiry, but its timestamp should not be assumed to establish the precise moment of legal receipt without investigating the receiving system.

Obtain the original service record, full message headers, gateway logs, acknowledgement policy and any extension correspondence. A valid extension granted before the deadline could change the result. Advise that timeliness is presently uncertain or adverse on the available evidence, preserve all records and avoid promising acceptance. The exercise tests rule selection, date calculation, evidence evaluation and communication—not recollection of an unstated law.

Check your understanding

1. Does a foreign admission certificate itself prove an SQE exemption?

No. Identify a specific SRA exemption decision and its scope.

2. What is the dangerous shortcut in the exercise?

Treating dispatch and receipt as the same event despite the supplied rule.

3. How should an uncertain factual point appear in advice?

State the provisional conclusion, the missing evidence and how that evidence could change the advice.

Your next assignment

Create five rule cards from your existing SQE lesson, write a counterexample for each and maintain an error log separating rule errors, factual errors and answer-selection errors. Use the existing SQE Complete LMS for the programme's actual lessons.

Review your work for five things: correct issue, accurate source or supplied rule, relevant facts, reasoned conclusion and a practical next step. Use fictional or anonymised facts, not confidential client documents.
