Foundational study guides: route orientation, study method and original worked practice. These are not a complete examination syllabus, an eligibility decision, regulator-endorsed training or a newly activated paid LMS course. Verify your individual requirements and examination session with the responsible regulator before committing money or making an application.
Chapter 1
A licensing plan has several independent components
Ontario's licensing process includes the barrister and solicitor examinations, the applicable experiential-training requirements, good character, documentation and fees. An internationally trained candidate should first establish the relevant academic recognition route and then follow the Law Society's licensing instructions.
Keep examination registration, assigned materials, training and character disclosures as distinct workstreams. Do not infer examination format, permitted aids or booking availability from an old course advertisement: the current candidate instructions govern those matters.
Suggested organisation task: create a milestone table recording the licensing requirement, status, next action, evidence and responsible body. 'I have bought preparation material' is a study milestone, not proof of registration or completion. Avoid uploading real client documents to a practice tool when a fictional example can teach the same skill.

Chapter 2
Combine navigation practice with professional judgment
Treat your notes as an index to the assigned learning sources, not as a substitute for them. A useful entry contains a topic, the precise location, a short rule description and a warning about a common confusion. Test whether you can locate the correct source for an unfamiliar fact pattern without relying on remembered page numbers from an earlier edition.
For a client-file question, work in sequence: identify the client, screen the relationship, establish instructions, determine what information is confidential, identify the proposed action and check the rule governing that action. Similar facts may require different responses depending on whose interests and information are involved.
Practise selecting a safe next step when facts are incomplete. A confident final conclusion is not always the right answer; sometimes the justified action is to obtain instructions, check a conflict or preserve money and records. Keep the reason for your choice explicit so a correct guess is not mistaken for reliable understanding.

Chapter 3
Original practice — client identity and a joint instruction
Assumed training rules only: before accepting a joint matter, a lawyer must identify each proposed client, disclose a material conflict and obtain any consent the applicable rule permits. Consent cannot cure a conflict that prevents competent independent advice. A third-party payer does not automatically become the client.
Two founders request a joint shareholder agreement. One founder will pay the legal fee and privately asks the lawyer to omit a minority-protection clause without telling the other. They say there is no conflict because they are friends. No retainer or conflict analysis has been completed.
Write an intake note explaining the proposed client relationships, the effect of fee payment, the conflict problem and a defensible next step. State what you must not promise about keeping the payer's instruction secret in a proposed joint representation.

Attempt first, then compare
Write your own response before revealing the explanation. Identify which facts activate the supplied rule and where further evidence is needed.
Reveal the worked model answer
Identify both proposed clients and distinguish the payer from the client relationship. Friendship does not answer whether their legal interests differ. The request to conceal a material drafting choice is a clear reason to stop and assess whether joint representation is permissible under the supplied framework.
Do not accept the private instruction or assure the payer that material information will be hidden from the other proposed joint client. Explain the conflict issue, consider separate representation and obtain supervision or an ethics determination where needed. Consent is not a universal cure if competent independent advice cannot be given. The exercise does not establish a real Ontario disciplinary outcome.
Check your understanding
1. Does NCA completion itself complete Ontario licensing?
No. Ontario's examinations, training and other applicable licensing requirements remain separate.
2. Does payment of the fee conclusively identify the only client?
No. Establish the retainer and proposed client relationships rather than equating payer with client.
3. What is the first task before substantive drafting in the example?
Clarify client identity and assess the conflict and permissible representation.
Your next assignment
Prepare a licensing milestone tracker and a fictional intake checklist. Rehearse locating five relevant provisions in your current assigned materials, recording both the answer and the source location.
Review your work for five things: correct issue, accurate source or supplied rule, relevant facts, reasoned conclusion and a practical next step. Use fictional or anonymised facts, not confidential client documents.
