How to learn this course
Explore the course, work through a relevant example, and learn how to read, ask questions, practise and revise.
Welcome to Bachelor of Science (BSc) — Information Technology — Academic Support. This video adapts a worked example from your published course reading, then shows how to practise through the learning management system. 3-year bachelor’s route / 4-year honours or research route, where offered. Year-wise / professional-phase study plans, original foundation workshops, answered practice and available protected LMS readings. Sign in and open your authorised course through the study header. Select a lesson from its current published reading list. With Auto audio on, Course Tutor teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. The type of an operand affects arithmetic. For the positive integer values used here, integer division keeps the whole-number quotient, while the remainder operator reports what is left. Converting an operand to floating point before division changes the calculation. The published C example assigns seven to integer a and two to integer b. It prints their integer quotient, their remainder, and the result after converting a to floating point. Seven contains three complete groups of two, leaving one. The first two results are therefore three and one. Converting a to seven point zero before dividing preserves the fractional part, producing three point five. Check the integer results independently: three times two plus one equals seven. The three printed values are three, one and three point five. They answer different questions; the floating-point result does not replace the integer quotient or remainder. Why does the cast change one result when the starting numbers are still seven and two? Include the illustration's given facts and the step you tried when asking Course Tutor. It changes the arithmetic type before division. Casting an already computed integer quotient would be too late to recover the discarded fractional part. Now try this related practice question. The source practice asks for seventeen remainder five, followed by multiplication by two. Predict the printed integer. Pause before checking the answer. The remainder is two. Multiplying that by two gives four. These operators share precedence here and are evaluated from left to right. Use this learning routine with your course's published material. Read, attempt a step, ask about what is unclear, and compare your reasoning. Revisit an error before continuing to the next lesson.
