Welcome to BUMS Academic Support. We will study Mizaj (Temperament): Definition, Equable and Inequable Types, Four Human Temperaments and Assessment by Ajnas-e-Ashra, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. 5½ years total · 3 professional phases of 18 months + 1 internship year. Year-wise / professional-phase study plans, original foundation workshops, answered practice and available protected LMS readings. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. 1. Malmas — feel of the body on touch (warm or cool, soft or hard). 2. Lahm wa Shahm — the amount of flesh and fat. 3. Sha'r — hair: thickness, rate of growth, colour. 4. Laun-e-Badan — complexion. 5. Haiyat-e-Aza — body build and organ proportions. Case (invented, Mr R, 24, student). Findings under each of the ten parameters: 1. Malmas — warm, firm. 2. Lahm wa Shahm — lean, muscular, little fat. 3. Sha'r — thick, dark, fast-growing hair. 4. Laun — wheatish with a reddish-yellow tinge. 5. Haiyat — broad chest, prominent veins. 6. Kaifiyat-e-Infe'al — troubled quickly by heat, tolerates cold well. 7. Naum wa Yaqza — sleeps less, wakes easily. 8. Af'al — quick movements, strong appetite. 9. Fuzlat — urine deeply coloured, stool tending to dryness. 10. Infe'alat-e-Nafsaniya — quick to anger, quick to calm. Step 1 — heat versus cold. Parameters pointing to heat: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 = 8. Pointing to cold: none. Indeterminate: 2, 7 for this axis. Heat tally = 8 of 8 decisive = 100% of decisive parameters favour heat. Step 2 — moist versus dry. Pointing to dryness: 2 (lean, little fat), 7 (less sleep), 9 (dry stool), 1 (firm rather than soft) = 4. Pointing to moistness: none clearly. Dry tally = 4 of 4 decisive = 100%. Step 3 — conclusion. Hot and dry: Safravi temperament, consistent with his age being in the hot period of life. Check of tallies: heat list has eight entries (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 — counted twice: eight). Dry list has four entries (1, 2, 7, 9 — counted twice: four). Note that one parameter (malmas) can inform both axes. Second example (short). A person who is fleshy with soft, cool skin, sleeps heavily, gains weight easily, has a calm temperament and pale complexion — cold and moist features dominate: Balghami. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? 1. Saying an equable temperament means equal proportions. Correction: medical equability (Motadil Tibbi) is the proportion best suited to function, not exact equality. 2. Listing only four inequable temperaments. Correction: there are eight — four simple and four compound. 3. Mixing Safravi and Saudavi qualities. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Step 1 — heat versus cold. Parameters pointing to heat: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 = 8. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Name the four compound inequable temperaments. Pause before the answer. The source answer is: Hot-moist, hot-dry, cold-moist and cold-dry. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.

How the study sessions work

Self-paced reading, tutor-guided explanation and independent practice. These are suggested learning sessions, not a published live faculty timetable. Teacher-led feedback is available only when separately confirmed for your programme.

  1. Read and recall: Read the selected unit, close the text, and state its main idea and two supporting reasons in your own words.
  2. Tutor-guided explanation: Ask Course Tutor to explain one specific difficulty and show a worked example. Check citations, calculations and legal/clinical statements against the primary source.
  3. Apply independently: Attempt a new problem, case analysis, code task or evidence-based essay before opening the model approach.
  4. Check and correct: Compare your result with the marking criteria. Keep the original answer, correction, reason for the error and one transfer question.
  5. Review and assess: Revisit the unit in the next study session and at the end of the study block. Combine short recall, application and a cumulative assignment.

Assessment and feedback

Use a short diagnostic, unit practice, a study-block assignment and a cumulative review.
