Welcome to CFA Level II Preparation. Follow Ethics in Item-Set Cases: Trade Allocation, Client Brokerage, Personal Trading and Supervisory Duties, then practise in the learning system. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Fair dealing in trade allocation (III(B)). Recommendations must be disseminated so that no client group is disadvantaged; trade execution must be fair. Vignette (invented). Riverbend Capital manages equity portfolios. Five facts: (a) Portfolio manager Neha Iyer receives a partial fill on a block purchase of a mid-cap share and allocates the whole fill to her three largest institutional accounts, planning to buy for the others "next week". (b) Riverbend pays for a financial data terminal used by its marketing team with commissions from client trades. (c) Neha's brother holds a fee-paying account at Riverbend on the firm's standard terms; when the fill is allocated he receives nothing, even though the share is suitable for him. (d) Compliance officer Vikram Das learns that analyst Rohan Mehta bought a share for his own account one hour before the firm's buy recommendation was released. Rohan says it was an oversight. Vikram accepts the explanation and closes the file. (e) Riverbend's marketing brochure shows a composite return that excludes three accounts that left the firm after poor performance. Analysis. (a) Violation of III(B). A partial fill should be allocated pro rata among all accounts for which the order was intended. Favouring the largest accounts disadvantages the others. (b) Violation of III(A). A marketing tool does not assist investment decisions for the clients who paid the commissions; this is the firm's overhead paid with client assets. (c) Also part of the III(B) failure, but note the reasoning: a family member who is a normal fee-paying client must be treated like any other client. Excluding him to avoid the appearance of favouritism disadvantages him and is not required. (d) Rohan violated VI(B) by trading ahead of clients; because the unreleased recommendation could move the price, II(A) is also engaged. Vignette question: did Vikram violate IV(C)? Yes. A reasonable response would investigate, review Rohan's other trades, and restrict or monitor his trading until the matter is resolved. Accepting an assurance is not a reasonable effort. (e) Violation of III(D). Removing terminated accounts creates survivorship bias and misrepresents historical performance. Recommended procedures. A written allocation policy with pre-trade allocation records; a soft-dollar policy limiting use to research; pre-clearance and blackout periods for personal trading; and composite construction that keeps terminated accounts in historical periods. Ask Course Tutor to explain this step: Rohan says it was an oversight. Say what you tried. Pause and try this source task. Is paying for a research report used in managing client portfolios with client commissions acceptable? The source answer is: Yes, if the research directly assists investment decisions for those clients and best execution is maintained. Compare your method and result, correct an error, then continue. Finance Foundations — Time Value of Money
Follow the classroom example from the value of money today to annual compounding, the difference from simple interest, and discounting a future amount to its present value.
An introductory lesson shared across ACCA, actuarial, CFA, CFP and FRM preparation. Continue with your selected programme for its full curriculum and published lessons.
Worked examples
Follow the on-screen worked examples and use the calculations below to review each step.
The examples assume a 10% annual rate and annual compounding. This rate is an illustration for the calculation.
Compounding calculates interest on the original amount plus accumulated interest. Discounting finds today’s equivalent of a future amount using the stated rate and period.
Build the balance, year by year
Year 1 interest: ₹10,000 × 10% = ₹1,000.
Year 1 balance: ₹10,000 + ₹1,000 = ₹11,000.
Year 2 interest: ₹11,000 × 10% = ₹1,100.
Year 2 balance: ₹11,000 + ₹1,100 = ₹12,100.
Simple-interest balance: ₹10,000 + ₹1,000 + ₹1,000 = ₹12,000.
Difference: ₹12,100 − ₹12,000 = ₹100 of interest on interest.
Future value and present value
FV = PV × (1 + r)n
₹10,000 × (1.10)2 = ₹12,100.
PV = FV ÷ (1 + r)n
₹12,100 ÷ (1.10)2 = ₹10,000.
Second example: ₹5,000 × (1.10)2 = ₹6,050.
PV is present value; FV is future value; r is the rate per period as a decimal; n is the number of periods. Match the rate and the period.
