Welcome to Class 4 Computers & Digital Skills. We will study Computer fundamentals, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Class 4 supplementary learning and exam support for Computers & Digital Skills, with original reading notes, topic practice, revision and tutor-led explanation. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Keep your board, session and medium selected. In this lesson you will learn what a computer is actually made of and how its parts work together. You will learn the difference between hardware and software. You will learn what input devices and output devices do, and that a few devices do both. Second example. A child spends half an hour typing a story, then the electricity goes off, and the story is gone. Explain exactly what happened. While the child was typing, the story existed only in memory, which is the computer's temporary working space. Memory needs electricity to hold anything. The moment the power stopped, the contents of memory were lost. Nothing was ever copied onto the disk, because the child had not saved. Had they clicked save even once, a copy would have been written to storage, which does not need power to remember, and most of the story would have survived. The lesson is to save early and then to keep saving as you work. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is calling everything inside the box the CPU. The CPU is one component, sitting alongside memory, storage and other parts. The second is treating memory and storage as the same. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Memory needs electricity to hold anything. The moment the power stopped, the contents of memory were lost. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Name two kinds of storage. Pause before the answer. The source answer is: any two of hard disk, solid state drive, pen drive, memory card and cloud storage. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
