Welcome to IELTS Academic Preparation. We will study IELTS Listening: The Four Parts, Question Types, Distractors and Word Limits, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Structured learning support for IELTS Academic Preparation, with reading notes, guided practice, revision and tutor-led explanations. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. 1. Form, note, table, flow-chart and summary completion — fill gaps with words from the recording. Check the grammar of the gap: a noun after "the", a plural if the heading is plural, a number after "£" or a date after "on". Recording extract (invented, Part 1). Receptionist: So, the course starts on the third of March? Caller: I thought so, but the email said the fifth — yes, it's definitely the fifth. Receptionist: Fine. And the fee — the standard rate is ninety pounds, but as you're over sixty it's seventy-five. Caller: Great. My surname's Okafor: O-K-A-F-O-R. Receptionist: And where did you hear about us? Caller: My neighbour recommended you — I'd seen a poster, but that wasn't what made me call. Questions (NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER): 1. Start date: 2. Fee: £ 3. Surname: 4. Heard about course from: Reasoning and answers. 1. "third of March" is a distractor corrected to "the fifth". Answer: 5 March (or 5th March). 2. "ninety pounds" is the standard rate; the condition "over sixty" applies. Answer: 75. 3. The spelling is dictated. Answer: Okafor. 4. "poster" is mentioned but rejected. Answer: (her/his) neighbour — "neighbour" alone is safest within the two-word limit. Checking the limit. "5 March" is one number and one word, within the limit. "My neighbour" is two words and also acceptable, but "a neighbour recommended it" would exceed the limit and score zero. Map example (Part 2). The speaker says: "Go through the main gate; the café is immediately on your right, and the gift shop is directly opposite it, beside the car park." If the map shows a building to the left of the gate next to the car park, that building is the gift shop. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Writing the first number you hear. Correction: wait for corrections and conditions before deciding. Ignoring the word limit. Correction: read the instruction for every group and count words. Misspelling common words. Correction: practise spelling high-frequency topic words such as accommodation, environment, government, library, Wednesday. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Start date: 2. Fee: £ 3. Surname: 4. Heard about course from: Reasoning and answers. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. The speaker says "normally £40, but members pay £32", and you are a member. What do you write? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: 32. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
