Welcome to Master of Commerce (MCom) — Business Economics. We will study Demand Analysis and Elasticity: Price, Income, Cross and Promotional Elasticity in Business Decisions, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Postgraduate academic support for Master of Commerce (MCom) — Business Economics, including advanced concept notes, research orientation, assessment practice and dissertation support. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Price elasticity (Ep) = % change in Q divided by % change in P. It is normally negative; textbooks often discuss its absolute value. |Ep| > 1: elastic; |Ep| < 1: inelastic; |Ep| = 1: unitary; 0: perfectly inelastic; ∞: perfectly elastic. Example 3 — Income and cross elasticity. Monthly household income rises from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 and purchases of a packaged food rise from 10 to 11 packs. Arc Ey = (1 divided by 10.5) divided by (10,000 divided by 45,000) = 0.0952 divided by 0.2222 = 0.43: a normal necessity. The price of tea rises by 10% and demand for coffee rises by 5%: Exy = 5 divided by 10 = +0.5, so tea and coffee are substitutes. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? 1. Calling a price-driven change a "shift". Own-price changes cause movements along the curve. 2. Using the base-point formula for large changes. It gives different answers for rises and falls; use the midpoint method. 3. Assuming constant elasticity on a straight-line demand curve. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Arc Ey = (1 divided by 10.5) divided by (10,000 divided by 45,000) = 0.0952 divided by 0.2222 = 0.43: a normal necessity. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Price rises from ₹20 to ₹30 and quantity falls from 110 to 90. Find arc elasticity. Pause before the answer. The source answer is: % change in Q = −20 divided by 100 = −0.2; % change in P = 10 divided by 25 = 0.4; Ep = −0.5 (inelastic). Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
