Welcome to Master of Science (MSc) — Computer Science. We will study Algorithm Design Paradigms: Divide and Conquer, Greedy Choice and Dynamic Programming, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Postgraduate academic support for Master of Science (MSc) — Computer Science, including advanced concept notes, research orientation, assessment practice and dissertation support. The underlying degree is awarded only by the learner's recognised institution. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Standard greedy algorithms include activity selection (pick the activity that finishes earliest), Huffman coding (repeatedly merge the two least-frequent symbols), Kruskal's and Prim's minimum spanning tree algorithms, Dijkstra's single-source shortest paths (for non-negative edge weights) and the fractional knapsack (take items in decreasing value-per-weight order). Example 3 — Activity selection (greedy). Activities as (start, finish): (1, 4), (3, 5), (0, 6), (5, 7), (8, 9), (5, 9). Sort by finish: (1,4), (3,5), (0,6), (5,7), (5,9), (8,9). Pick (1,4). Next compatible (start greater than or equal to 4): (5,7). Next with start greater than or equal to 7: (8,9). Selected: 3 activities. No set of 4 is possible because (0,6), (3,5) and (1,4) all overlap one another and at most one of them can be chosen. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Using greedy without proof. Correction: give an exchange argument or a counter-example before accepting a greedy rule. Calling the knapsack DP polynomial. Correction: Θ(nW) is pseudo-polynomial; the 0/1 knapsack decision problem is NP-complete. Running Dijkstra on negative edges. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Pick (1,4). Next compatible (start greater than or equal to 4): (5,7). Next with start greater than or equal to 7: (8,9). Selected: 3 activities. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Why is Dijkstra's algorithm classified as greedy? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: At each step it permanently finalises the unvisited vertex with the smallest tentative distance, a local choice that is never revised; with non-negative weights this choice is provably optimal. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
