Welcome to Medical Laboratory Technology Academic Support. We will study Specimen Collection: Venepuncture, Anticoagulants and the Order of Draw, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Common bachelor route: 4 years including placement; exact award / batch may differ. Year-wise / professional-phase study plans, original foundation workshops, answered practice and available protected LMS readings. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. The order of draw Additives from one tube can be carried into the next on the needle. The internationally used order (from the CLSI guideline on venous blood collection) is designed so that the most damaging carry-over cannot happen: 1. Blood culture bottles (sterility first) 2. Sodium citrate tube (light blue) 3. Example 1: choosing tubes. A request asks for CBC, PT/INR, fasting plasma glucose and serum creatinine. CBC: EDTA (lavender). PT/INR: citrate (light blue), filled to the line. Fasting glucose: fluoride/oxalate (grey). Creatinine: serum (gold or red). Order of draw: citrate, then serum, then EDTA, then fluoride. If a butterfly set is used, draw a discard tube first. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Leaving the tourniquet on throughout the draw. Correction: release it once blood flows; prolonged stasis raises proteins, calcium and cell counts. Underfilling the citrate tube. Correction: fill to the mark; the 9:1 ratio is part of the test. Drawing EDTA before the serum tube. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. PT/INR: citrate (light blue), filled to the line. Fasting glucose: fluoride/oxalate (grey). Creatinine: serum (gold or red). Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Why does fluoride preserve glucose in a sample? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: Fluoride inhibits enolase, stopping glycolysis so blood cells cannot consume the glucose. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.

How the study sessions work

Self-paced reading, tutor-guided explanation and independent practice. These are suggested learning sessions, not a published live faculty timetable. Teacher-led feedback is available only when separately confirmed for your programme.

  1. Read and recall: Read the selected unit, close the text, and state its main idea and two supporting reasons in your own words.
  2. Tutor-guided explanation: Ask Course Tutor to explain one specific difficulty and show a worked example. Check citations, calculations and legal/clinical statements against the primary source.
  3. Apply independently: Attempt a new problem, case analysis, code task or evidence-based essay before opening the model approach.
  4. Check and correct: Compare your result with the marking criteria. Keep the original answer, correction, reason for the error and one transfer question.
  5. Review and assess: Revisit the unit in the next study session and at the end of the study block. Combine short recall, application and a cumulative assignment.

Assessment and feedback

Use a short diagnostic, unit practice, a study-block assignment and a cumulative review.
