Welcome to NSQF / NQR Qualification Preparation — Management & Entrepreneurship. We will study Finding and Testing a Business Opportunity: Idea Screening, SWOT, PESTLE, Market Research and Market Sizing, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Training support for current NSQF-aligned qualifications in the Management & Entrepreneurship sector. The exact qualification, level, occupational standard, practical requirements and awarding body are selected from the current National Qualifications Register before enrolment. Market sizing. TAM (total addressable market): total annual spending on this kind of product or service by everyone who could use it. SAM (serviceable available market): the part of TAM your business model can reach — your geography, segment and channel. Example 2 — TAM, SAM, SOM (invented figures). A city has 2,00,000 households; on average each spends ₹300 a month on packaged snacks. TAM = 2,00,000 times 300 times 12 = ₹72,00,00,000 = ₹72 crore a year. The venture sells healthy baked snacks through local stores; assume 20% of spending is in the health-conscious segment it can reach. SAM = 72 crore times 0.20 = ₹14.4 crore. Assume a realistic 5% share of SAM by year two. SOM = 14.4 crore times 0.05 = ₹0.72 crore = ₹72 lakh. Check backwards: 72 lakh divided by 0.05 = 14.4 crore; 14.4 crore divided by 0.20 = 72 crore; 72 crore divided by (12 times 300) = 2,00,000 households. Confirmed. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? 1. Falling in love with an idea before testing demand. Correction: validate with customer interviews and a small MVP before investing heavily. 2. Asking "Would you buy it?" Correction: ask about past behaviour and spending; watch what people actually pay for. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. SAM = 72 crore times 0.20 = ₹14.4 crore. Assume a realistic 5% share of SAM by year two. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. A town has 50,000 households spending ₹200 a month on a service. What is the annual TAM? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: 50,000 times 200 times 12 = ₹1,20,00,000, that is ₹1.2 crore. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
