Welcome to SSC Exams. We will study Number System: Divisibility, HCF, LCM and Unit Digits, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. SSC competitive exam preparation pathway. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Remainder patterns. Many SSC questions ask for the least number that leaves a given remainder when divided by several divisors. If the remainder is the same (r) for every divisor, the answer is LCM + r. Example 2 — remainder patterns. (a) Find the least number which, when divided by 12, 15 and 20, leaves a remainder of 7 in each case. LCM(12, 15, 20) = 60, so the answer is 60 + 7 = 67. Check: 67 = 5 times 12 + 7 = 4 times 15 + 7 = 3 times 20 + 7. (b) Find the least number which, when divided by 6, 8 and 10, leaves remainders 4, 6 and 8 respectively. Gaps: 6 − 4 = 2, 8 − 6 = 2, 10 − 8 = 2, constant d = 2. LCM(6, 8, 10) = 120, so the answer is 120 − 2 = 118. Check: 118 = 19 times 6 + 4 = 14 times 8 + 6 = 11 times 10 + 8. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Testing 12 as 2 and 6. A number divisible by 2 and 6 need not be divisible by 12 (for example 18). Correction: always test composite divisors through co-prime factors, such as 3 and 4. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Gaps: 6 − 4 = 2, 8 − 6 = 2, 10 − 8 = 2, constant d = 2. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. How many factors does 360 have? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: 360 = 2 cubed times 3 squared times 5, so the number of factors is (3 + 1)(2 + 1)(1 + 1) = 24. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
