Welcome to Punjab PCS. We will study Programme Reader 02 — Core Concepts & Vocabulary, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Punjab civil services preparation for direct and state-specific general studies, governance and writing practice. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Begin with the regional vocabulary, which is organised by rivers. The land between two rivers is a doab, and the state's three regions follow from that. Majha lies between the Ravi and the Beas and contains Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran. Here is the vocabulary doing real work. A question asks you to examine why agricultural development in the kandi belt has lagged behind the rest of the state. A candidate without the vocabulary writes generally about backwardness. A candidate who holds it writes something sharper. The kandi belt runs along the Shivalik foothills in Hoshiarpur, Ropar and Pathankot, where the land is undulating and the soil thin, so the canal command and the tube well economy that transformed the plains were never available in the same way. Rainfall runs off rapidly instead of recharging, seasonal streams cut through fields, and holdings are fragmented across slopes. The wheat and paddy rotation that drives incomes elsewhere is unsuited here, because paddy needs standing water the land cannot hold. The remedy therefore lies in a different direction from the rest of the state: water harvesting structures, horticulture and agro forestry rather than assured irrigation for a water intensive rotation. The answer then concludes that uniform agricultural policy fails in this belt because the constraint is physical rather than administrative. Every move in that paragraph came from knowing three terms and what they imply. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is confusing Majha and Malwa. Fix it by fixing the rivers: Majha between Ravi and Beas, Doaba between Beas and Sutlej, Malwa south of the Sutlej. The second is calling the district head the Collector. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Rainfall runs off rapidly instead of recharging, seasonal streams cut through fields, and holdings are fragmented across slopes. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. which two rivers bound the Majha region? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: the Ravi and the Beas. Second, which region lies south of the Sutlej? Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
