Welcome to Rajasthan RAS / RPSC. We will study Programme Reader 02 — Core Concepts & Vocabulary, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Begin with the physical vocabulary, organised around the Aravalli. North and west of the range lies the arid zone: the Marusthali, or true desert, in the far west with its shifting sand, and beyond it the semi arid Bagar tract. Here is the vocabulary doing real work. A question asks you to examine the relevance of traditional water harvesting in the arid districts of the state. A candidate without the vocabulary writes that people used to store rainwater. A candidate who holds it writes something quite different. In the Marusthali, where rainfall is low, erratic and concentrated in a few storms, the problem is not annual total but the capture of a brief surplus. Each traditional structure solves a different part of that problem. The tanka captures clean roof and courtyard runoff for drinking, which matters because groundwater in much of the west is saline. The johad holds runoff in a depression so that it infiltrates and raises the water table for wells downstream. The khadin does not store water at all but stores soil moisture behind a bund, allowing a crop on land that would otherwise be barren. The nadi and the talab serve livestock and village use. The answer then explains why these matter now: they are distributed, locally maintained, require no energy, and recharge rather than extract. And it states the condition on which their revival depends, which is a functioning institution at village level to maintain them, since the technology never failed but the maintaining institution frequently did. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is treating the whole state as desert. Fix it by holding the Aravalli division and naming the south eastern plateau and plains. The second is confusing Marwar, Mewar and Mewat, which are three different regions. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Each traditional structure solves a different part of that problem. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. which range divides the state and what lies on each side? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: the Aravalli, with the arid Marusthali and Bagar to the north west and the better watered plateau and plains to the south east. Second, which region lies around Jodhpur, and which around Kota and Bundi? Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
