Welcome to UPSC Complete — English. We will study The Civil Services Examination: Three Stages and How They Connect, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Complete UPSC preparation pathway delivered in English. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Stage two: the Main Examination. The Main Examination (Mains) is a written, descriptive examination. Scenario 1: Reading the flow of marks. Riya is an invented candidate. In an invented year she scores well in Prelims GS I, just clears CSAT, clears Paper A and Paper B, and then scores 900 in the seven merit papers of Mains (invented figure) and 170 in the Personality Test (invented figure). Step 1: Is her Prelims score part of the final total? No. Prelims is screening only. Step 2: Are her Paper A and Paper B marks added? No. They are qualifying. Step 3: Final total = 900 + 170 = 1,070. Check: count only the seven merit papers plus interview: 900 (written) + 170 (interview) = 1,070. Both workings agree. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? 1. Treating Prelims marks as part of the final score. Correction: Prelims is screening; only Mains written and Personality Test marks form the merit list. 2. Ignoring CSAT because it is "only qualifying". Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Step 1: Is her Prelims score part of the final total? No. Prelims is screening only. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Which papers of the Main Examination are counted for merit? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: The Essay, General Studies I, II, III and IV, and Optional Papers I and II; the language Papers A and B are qualifying only. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
