Welcome to Class 11 Chemistry. We will study Physical chemistry, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Class 11 Chemistry learning and exam support across Indian senior-secondary pathways, with original concept notes, practice, revision and tutor-led explanations. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Keep your board, session and medium selected. Enthalpy alone does not decide whether a reaction happens. Some endothermic processes, such as ice melting above zero degrees Celsius, occur readily. The missing factor is entropy, a measure of the number of ways the energy and particles can be arranged, which increases when a solid melts, a gas forms, or substances mix. Example one. For the formation of ammonia from its elements the internal energy change at 298 kelvin is minus 87.0 kilojoules per mole of reaction. Find the enthalpy change, taking R as 8.314 joules per mole per kelvin. The change in the number of moles of gas is minus two. The correction term is delta n times R T, that is minus two times 8.314 times 298, which is minus 4955 joules, or minus 4.96 kilojoules. So delta H equals minus 87.0 minus 4.96, which is minus 92.0 kilojoules per mole. Check the direction: because the reaction consumes gas, the enthalpy change must be the more negative of the two, and it is. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? A frequent error is mixing units, leaving enthalpy in kilojoules and entropy in joules per kelvin within the same Gibbs energy calculation. Convert one of them before you begin. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. The change in the number of moles of gas is minus two. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. For the reaction in which two moles of gas become one, is delta H greater or less than delta U? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: less, since delta n is negative. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
