Welcome to Class 11 History. We will study Themes in world history, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Class 11 History learning and exam support across Indian senior-secondary pathways, with original concept notes, practice, revision and tutor-led explanations. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Keep your board, session and medium selected. Food production did not immediately make life better. Skeletal evidence from early farming populations often shows more dental disease, more repetitive strain injuries and sometimes poorer nutrition than among neighbouring foragers. Let us work through an argument rather than a source. The archaeologist V. Gordon Childe described the rise of cities as an urban revolution, and the phrase stuck. Is it a good description? The case for it is strong. Within a few centuries, settlements in southern Mesopotamia grew to a size that had no precedent, occupational specialisation became normal, monumental architecture appeared, and a recording technology was invented. The case against the word revolution is about pace and about causation. Excavation has shown that the process took many generations, with villages growing, contracting and sometimes being abandoned before the pattern stabilised. A word borrowed from political upheaval implies a sharp break, and the ground does not show one. There is also the question of cause. Childe leaned heavily on technology and surplus. Later scholars have argued that we cannot separate the economic story from the religious one, because the temple was both a storehouse and a shrine, and that trade mattered enormously, since the Mesopotamian plain has excellent soil but almost no stone, metal or good timber, so that city dwellers had to import what they could not grow. The reasonable conclusion is that revolution is a useful shorthand for the scale of the change and a misleading one for its speed. Notice that this is how historical debate usually resolves: not by one side winning, but by the terms being made more precise. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is describing foragers as primitive or as merely waiting for agriculture to be invented. They possessed detailed ecological knowledge and, on the evidence of working hours, often had more leisure than early farmers. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Excavation has shown that the process took many generations, with villages growing, contracting and sometimes being abandoned before the pattern stabilised. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Name three kinds of evidence used to reconstruct foraging societies. Pause before the answer. The source answer is: stone tools, animal bones bearing butchery marks and charred plant remains, together with hearths, burials and rock art. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
