Welcome to Class 11 Political Science. We will study Political theory, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Class 11 Political Science learning and exam support across Indian senior-secondary pathways, with original concept notes, practice, revision and tutor-led explanations. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Keep your board, session and medium selected. Begin with freedom. One influential account holds that a person is free to the extent that no one else deliberately prevents them from doing what they could otherwise do. Freedom on this view is the absence of interference, and it is measured by how few restraints there are. Let us work through the argument about affirmative action, since it brings freedom and equality into direct contact and is argued about seriously by thoughtful people. The case in favour runs as follows. Formal equality assumes a fair starting line. Where whole groups have been excluded over generations from education, land, occupation and public office, treating everyone identically now simply preserves the advantage that exclusion created. Positions are competed for using resources, contacts and preparation that past discrimination distributed unequally, so apparently neutral criteria transmit the old inequality into the present. Reservation of places is therefore a means of making equality of opportunity real rather than nominal. The Indian Constitution reflects this reasoning, permitting special provision for groups historically subjected to exclusion, alongside a general guarantee of equality. The case against is not simply prejudice, and you should state it at full strength. It argues that rights belong to individuals rather than to groups, and that an individual denied a place because of the group they belong to has a real grievance even if the policy is well meant. It argues that benefits tend to be captured by the better off within a designated group, so that the most disadvantaged gain least. It argues that group classifications, once entrenched in law, become politically entrenched and hard to withdraw, which may harden the very identities the policy was meant to make irrelevant. Notice how the disagreement should be described. Both sides claim equality. One reads it as identical treatment now, the other as the correction of accumulated disadvantage. Locating that difference is the analytical achievement, and only after doing so should an answer argue for a position, with reasons and with an honest acknowledgement of the costs. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is treating freedom as a single idea. Say which sense you mean, absence of restraint or capacity to act, because arguments turn on it. The second is treating equality as a single idea. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. The Indian Constitution reflects this reasoning, permitting special provision for groups historically subjected to exclusion, alongside a general guarantee of equality. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Define freedom as absence of interference and state its appeal. Pause before the answer. The source answer is: a person is free to the extent that others do not deliberately prevent them from acting, and its appeal is that it marks a protected area around each person that others, including the state, may not enter. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
