Keep your board, session and medium selected. From roughly the middle of the third millennium before the common era, and for some seven centuries, a distinctive urban culture extended across a very large area of the north western subcontinent, from sites in present day Gujarat and Rajasthan through Punjab and Sindh. Let us work through the disputed building at Harappa long called the granary, because it is the clearest lesson in this theme. The excavators of the earlier twentieth century identified a large structure, raised on a platform with ventilation channels, as a state granary, and drew a substantial conclusion from it: that the Harappan state collected grain as tax and stored it centrally, much as Mesopotamian temples did. The identification entered textbooks and stayed there. The difficulty is that no grain was found in it. The label came from the plan of the building and from the expectations of archaeologists trained on West Asian sites, where such comparisons were natural. Later scholars pointed out that the ventilation channels could serve other purposes, that the structure might have been a hall or a platform for another kind of building entirely, and that an interpretation carrying so much weight ought to rest on more than an analogy. This matters beyond one building. If it is a granary, we have evidence of centralised grain collection and therefore of something like a state. If it is not, one of the main props for that model falls away. So an argument about a ventilation channel turns into an argument about the nature of Harappan authority. When you write about this theme, say that the identification is disputed and explain what hangs on it. That single move demonstrates exactly the kind of reasoning the subject asks for. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is describing Harappan cities as identical. They share features, but Dholavira's water reservoirs, Lothal's layout and Kalibangan's ploughed field surface are distinct, and the variation is part of the evidence. The second is claiming the script has been deciphered. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. The label came from the plan of the building and from the expectations of archaeologists trained on West Asian sites, where such comparisons were natural. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. What makes archaeologists treat these settlements as one civilisation? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: a shared material culture across a very wide area, including comparable brick proportions, similar seals, a common script, standardised chert weights and recurring pottery forms. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
