Welcome to Master of Laws (LLM). We will study Legal Research Methodology: Doctrinal and Empirical Methods, Research Questions and Hypotheses, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Specialisation-wise postgraduate law learning and dissertation support. ZELVU Education provides supplementary academic support; university, semester, specialisation and current syllabus should be matched before exam-specific preparation. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Tools of data collection. A questionnaire is filled in by the respondent; an interview schedule is administered by the researcher; observation may be participant or non-participant; case studies examine one unit in depth. A pilot study tests the tool before full use. Designing a socio-legal study. A student wants to study delay in consumer complaints before District Commissions in a State with 30 District Commissions. Step 1 — question. "What is the average time between filing and final order in consumer complaints before District Commissions in State S, and what procedural stages account for most of the delay?" Step 2 — hypothesis. H1: Adjournments sought by opposite parties are the principal source of delay. H0: Adjournments sought by opposite parties are not associated with longer disposal time. Step 3 — method. Mixed: quantitative analysis of case records plus qualitative interviews with members, advocates and complainants. Step 4 — sampling. The student can examine 600 invented case files. Stratify the 30 Commissions into three groups by caseload (high, medium, low), say 6, 12 and 12 Commissions. Proportionate allocation by number of Commissions: high 600 times 6/30 = 120; medium 600 times 12/30 = 240; low 600 times 12/30 = 240. Check: 120 + 240 + 240 = 600. Within each Commission, use systematic sampling from the register. If a sampled Commission's register lists 400 disposed cases and 20 are needed, k = 400 / 20 = 20, so every 20th case is taken after a random start between 1 and 20. Check: 20 times 20 = 400. Step 5 — tools. A coding sheet for case files (dates of filing, notice, reply, evidence, arguments, order; number and source of adjournments). A semi-structured interview schedule for 15 purposively chosen practitioners. A pilot on 20 files to refine the sheet. Step 6 — ethics and limits. Anonymise parties; obtain permission to access records; acknowledge that disposed files exclude pending cases, which may bias averages downward. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? 1. Writing a topic instead of a question. Correction: phrase a precise, answerable question with scope limits of place, time and subject. 2. Hypotheses that cannot be tested. Correction: name the variables and the relationship you expect, and ensure data can confirm or refute it. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Step 4 — sampling. The student can examine 600 invented case files. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Distinguish a questionnaire from an interview schedule. Pause before the answer. The source answer is: A questionnaire is completed by the respondent; an interview schedule is filled in by the researcher while questioning the respondent. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
