Welcome to Palmistry & Hast Rekha Shastra. We will study History and Comparative Traditions of Hand-Reading, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. A cultural and observational introduction to hand-reading traditions, terminology and responsible communication. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. The Indian strand. In India, reading the hand is part of Samudrika Shastra, the traditional lore of bodily marks and features. The word samudrika is linked in tradition to Samudra, a sage figure credited with the teaching; that attribution is itself traditional, not a dated historical fact. Example 1: evaluating a claim. A website says: "Palmistry was invented in India 5,000 years ago and taught by Aristotle to Alexander the Great." Step 1, split the claim. There are three parts: an Indian origin, a date of 5,000 years, and an Aristotle–Alexander link. Step 2, test each part. An ancient Indian practice of reading bodily marks is well attested in literature. A precise figure of 5,000 years has no dated text behind it; it is a round traditional number. The Aristotle story is a later attribution, not documented in Aristotle's surviving works as a teaching of palmistry. Step 3, rewrite accurately: "Reading bodily marks, including those of the hand, is an old Indian tradition within Samudrika Shastra; exact dates are uncertain, and the story linking Aristotle and Alexander to palmistry is legend." Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Repeating round-number antiquity claims as fact. Correction: say "ancient, exact date uncertain" unless a dated source is cited. Treating Cheiro's books as a pure Indian text. Correction: they are a nineteenth- and twentieth-century blend of European and Indian-presented material. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Step 2, test each part. An ancient Indian practice of reading bodily marks is well attested in literature. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. What did d'Arpentigny contribute to palmistry? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: A classification of hands by shape, published in La Chirognomonie (1843), which gave rise to cheirognomy. Compare your reasoning as well as the result. If your response differs, return to the worked example and identify the step that needs correction. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
