Welcome to Panchang, Muhurta & Vedic Timekeeping. We will study Solar, Lunar and Lunisolar Time, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. A calculation-aware introduction to Indian calendars, the five panchang limbs and muhurta traditions. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Two kinds of month. The synodic month is the time from one new moon to the next, about 29.53 days. Phases, tithis and lunar months depend on it. The sidereal month is the time for the Moon to return to the same position among the stars, about 27.32 days. Example 1: lunar drift. How far does a purely lunar festival move in 3 years against the solar year? Shortfall per year = 365.24 − 354.37 = 10.87 days. Over 3 years: 3 times 10.87 = 32.61 days. Check: 36 synodic months = 36 times 29.53 = 1,063.08 days; 3 solar years = 3 times 365.24 = 1,095.72 days; difference = 32.64 days. Confirmed (the small difference is rounding). Conclusion: after about three years the lunar count falls a full month behind, which is exactly why a lunisolar calendar inserts an adhika masa about once in 32 to 33 months. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Confusing the synodic and sidereal months. Correction: phases and tithis follow the synodic month (29.53 days); nakshatras follow the sidereal month (27.32 days). Assuming Makar Sankranti is the winter solstice. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Check: 36 synodic months = 36 times 29.53 = 1,063.08 days; 3 solar years = 3 times 365.24 = 1,095.72 days; difference = 32.64 days. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Why is the sidereal month shorter than the synodic month? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: Because the Earth moves along its orbit during the month, the Moon needs extra time to return to the same phase relative to the Sun. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
