Welcome to UGC NET Commerce (008). We will study Business Environment and Trade Theories for UGC NET Commerce, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Paper I + Paper II Commerce specialisation. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Business environment means everything outside and inside a firm that affects how it makes decisions, but the exam mostly tests the outside part. The external environment splits into two layers. The micro layer sits close to the firm: its customers, suppliers, competitors, marketing intermediaries and the public it deals with directly. This is not a quantitative unit, but comparative advantage is tested with numbers. The figures below are a made-up teaching example, not from any past paper. Suppose one unit of labour in Country Alpha can produce either 10 units of cloth or 5 units of wine. One unit of labour in Country Beta can produce either 6 units of cloth or 4 units of wine. Notice Alpha is absolutely better at making both goods (10 > 6 and 5 > 4). Step 1 — find the opportunity cost of cloth in each country. In Alpha, making 1 unit of cloth costs 5 divided by 10 = 0.5 units of wine given up. In Beta, making 1 unit of cloth costs 4 divided by 6 = 0.667 units of wine given up (rounded to three decimals). Step 2 — find the opportunity cost of wine in each country. In Alpha, making 1 unit of wine costs 10 divided by 5 = 2 units of cloth given up. In Beta, making 1 unit of wine costs 6 divided by 4 = 1.5 units of cloth given up. Step 3 — compare. Alpha's opportunity cost of cloth (0.5 wine) is lower than Beta's (0.667 wine), so Alpha has the comparative advantage in cloth. Beta's opportunity cost of wine (1.5 cloth) is lower than Alpha's (2 cloth), so Beta has the comparative advantage in wine. Step 4 — conclusion. Even though Alpha produces more of both goods with the same labour, both countries gain by specializing: Alpha in cloth, Beta in wine, then trading. This is the point the exam tests — comparative advantage depends on opportunity cost, not on which country is absolutely more efficient. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Students mix up FDI and FPI and describe portfolio investment as bringing management control, which it does not. Students call monetary policy a Finance Ministry function, when it is the RBI's statutory job through the Monetary Policy Committee. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. In Alpha, making 1 unit of cloth costs 5 divided by 10 = 0.5 units of wine given up. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. What is the difference between the micro and macro external business environment? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: A1. The micro environment consists of factors close to the firm that it interacts with directly — customers, suppliers, competitors, intermediaries and the public. The macro environment consists of broader forces that affect every firm in the economy at once, such as economic policy, social values, technology, demography and the international setting. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
