Welcome to UGC NET Sociology (005). We will study Caste System: Varna and Jati, Purity-Pollution, Sanskritisation, Dominant Caste, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. Paper I plus Sociology Paper II preparation across theory, methods, institutions, inequality and social change. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. Select this published lesson. Start Course Tutor with Auto audio on: it teaches continuously, answers a typed question, then resumes. Change has been studied through several concepts. Sanskritisation names the process by which a group adopts the ritual practices, diet, dress and idiom of a higher group and claims a superior position in the hierarchy; it produces positional change for a group while leaving the structure of hierarchy intact. A jati traditionally engaged in leather work prospers through a transport business, gives up its old occupation, adopts vegetarianism, engages priests for domestic rituals, adds a new surname and claims a higher varna position. Analyse the case. Name the process. This is sanskritisation: the emulation of the practices and idiom of a group ranked higher. Note the sequence, which is the point most often missed. The economic change came first. Ritual claims made without material resources are rarely conceded, whereas a group with land, business or political weight can sustain the expense of new rituals, withdraw its women from stigmatised labour and press its claim over time. Assess what has changed and what has not. For this group, position may improve over two or three generations. For the system, nothing has altered: the hierarchy remains, purity and pollution remain its idiom, and the claim is made by accepting the ranking rather than rejecting it. Contrast the alternative response. A group may instead reject the hierarchy altogether, refusing its ritual idiom and converting, adopting a separate religious or political identity, or demanding rights as a matter of citizenship. That response, unlike sanskritisation, attacks the structure, and the two strategies have often divided the same community. Predict the friction. Claims of this kind are contested by those immediately above, who have most to lose from a rival's ascent; local conflict following a caste's attempt to hold a procession, wear particular ornaments or enter a temple is the characteristic form this contest takes. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? The first mistake is treating varna and jati as the same thing, or supposing that every jati has a settled all-India varna rank. The second is presenting the purity and pollution account as the complete explanation, omitting land, labour and power. Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Assess what has changed and what has not. For this group, position may improve over two or three generations. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. Now try the source practice. Why is endogamy treated as the mechanism of the system rather than one rule among many? Pause before the answer. The source answer is: Because closed groups can only persist if their boundaries are reproduced in the next generation, and marriage is what reproduces them; occupational restriction can lapse and commensality can relax while the order survives, but general intermarriage would dissolve the groups themselves within a few generations. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
