Welcome to Vedas & Upanishads – Foundations. We will study The Four Vedas and Their Textual Layers, work through an example, and practise using the course's learning material. A plural, text-centred foundation in Vedic corpora, transmission, major Upanishadic questions and interpretation. Sign in and use the study header to open your authorised course. The book of yajus, sacrificial formulas, many in prose. It has two branches: Śukla (White) Yajurveda — the Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā (recensions Mādhyandina and Kāṇva), which keeps mantras separate from explanation. Its Brāhmaṇa is the vast Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa. Example 1 — Identify the Veda and layer. A passage is cited as "Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa 14". Reasoning: Śatapatha is the Brāhmaṇa of the Śukla Yajurveda. Its final book (the fourteenth, in the Mādhyandina version) contains the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad. So the passage is Śukla Yajurveda, formally Brāhmaṇa layer, and in content Upaniṣadic. The correct answer notes the overlap rather than choosing only one label. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Saying the Sāmaveda has mostly original verses. Correction: most of its verses come from the Ṛgveda; its distinct content is musical. Mixing up Śukla and Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda. Correction: Śukla keeps mantra and explanation apart (Vājasaneyi); Kṛṣṇa mixes them (Taittirīya and others). Ask Course Tutor: please explain this step from the example. Its final book (the fourteenth, in the Mādhyandina version) contains the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad. Why does it follow? Add what you tried, so the explanation addresses your difficulty. The source answer is: In the Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda mantras and prose explanations are mixed in the Saṃhitā; the Śukla keeps the mantras separate, with explanation in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa. Explain the key idea in your own words, revisit any mistaken step, then continue to the next lesson. Use Stop to end Course Tutor when you finish.
