The oldest surviving Jyotisha text is the Vedanga Jyotisha, attributed to Lagadha, transmitted in a Rigvedic and a Yajurvedic recension. It is a short manual for a five-year cycle (yuga) of solar and lunar reckoning, used to time sacrifices. Identifying the school of a rule. A learner meets four statements in different books and must tag each. (a) "Mars aspects the fourth, seventh and eighth houses from itself." — Planetary aspects counted from the planet with special aspects for Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are the Parashari graha drishti. Tag: Parashari. (b) "Movable signs aspect fixed signs except the one adjacent." — Aspects between signs rather than planets are rashi drishti. Tag: Jaimini. (c) "The planet with the highest degree in its sign is the atmakaraka." — Significators chosen by degree are chara karakas. Tag: Jaimini. (d) "The muntha advances one sign each year from the natal lagna." — An annual-chart point. Tag: Tajika. Handling an apparent contradiction. A student reads in one place that Saturn's aspect is on the 3rd, 7th and 10th, and in another that signs aspect signs as a whole. These are not contradictory claims about Saturn; they are two different aspect systems. The correct written answer names both systems and states which one the reading uses. Handling edition differences. Two students cite "BPHS chapter on yogas" with different chapter numbers. Both may be right for their editions. The correct practice is to cite translator or editor plus chapter, so the reference can be checked. Which mistake would change the reasoning in this example? Calling every rule "Parashari". Correction: Jaimini and Tajika techniques are separate systems and should be labelled. Treating the printed BPHS as a fixed, single-author ancient book.
